How I Got Healthier
O LORD my God, I called to you for help and you healed me. – Psalm 30:2
Hello! Those of you who have read my story know that for years I was sick and now I’m a lot better. This is my new series on how I got healthier.
I’m saying healthier because if life has felt fit to teach me anything, it’s that perfection just doesn’t happen. Since overcoming Lyme Disease, Bartonella, and Babesiosis I’ve had two re-exposures: one when I went trampling through Everglades National Park with no socks on and was attacked by a deerfly, and the other in an encounter with a vicious kit-kit who swiped me with his sharpened claw… rendering me ill with cat scratch fever, aka Bartonella.
All that to say, even though hitting remission from chronic infections felt like climbing to the top of Mt. Everest (and doing a Rocky style dance while I was up there), I’ve learned that I can’t just “get” there and let it go. I’m learning to keep my health as a top priority on a daily basis, and I feel so blessed to be feeling the way I do.
I also just in general tend to geek out about nutrition and how the body works. If you ever meet me in person you will know I won’t hesitate to to gush for hours about how genius it is that God thought to put something like a mucociliary escalator into our design. (Don’t look it up… Unless you’re like me, and you like these things. In which case you should click here for a full explanation.)
So here’s my story. I made all of these changes over the course of a two year period from January 2008 – January 2010, and I’m still learning how to stick with them, fine tune them, and take care of myself the way I should. Which means if you see me online after midnight, you should promptly remind me that I’m working on getting more sleep.
It’s the little things… and I need all the help I can get.

YOU SHOULD KNOW: While I’m pursuing a degree in nutrition (at the pace of a snail), I am not a Registered Dietitian or health professional of any kind. I’m just a girl who was sick, is a lot better, and likes to tell everyone about it. Please find a Registered Dietitian or a doctor and get their approval before beginning any new health routine.
How are you getting healthier? Let me know here.
